“Torn Apart” - Danny Schutt

2009, Ink and Acrylic and Newspaper on Wood Panel, 12" x 18" x 9 - SOLD

A series of nine panels.
  1. The Unfortunate – An innocent baby, being born into the filth of this world. As a viewer, one can look through the images of his life and know what is going to happen, thus the apology
  2. The Discovery – Hands are one of the first big discoveries in a baby’s life. Once they discover they have hands they can begin to use them to beautiful and destructive things
  3. The Protector – A woman is clenching a small dove, protecting it from unknown evil. Although her best intentions are in mind, she is also trapping the small dove from flying free
  4. The Funeral – This image depicts the mourning state after a death in the family. Although physically the eyes are closed and the head is down, the mind is still occupied
  5. The Tallest Man – This painting signifies the pivotal moment in this character’s life when everything is at his feet. But with this comes the pressures and stress of being out in the world. The complexities of life are tightening their grasp around him
  6. The Apology – A gun, a symbol of power, of shortened life. Written inside the chambers (three of which are empty): F,O,R,G,I,V., contradicting the weapon’s very use
  7. The Frail (Life) – A small anemone, past its prime, slowly dips with age. At first glance, one might want to water it, try to revive it. Everything must come to an end, so why let it suffer any longer
  8. The Homage – These faces symbolize the possibilities of old age, of wisdom. Some look forward to it, others dread it, these faces know that it won’t ever happen
  9. The Man Being Torn Apart – The premature ending. Nobody knows when they will die. Maybe next time you live it will be much better
